In impoverished rural areas, widows face ostracism. Upon a man's death, his widow often bears the blame for his demise due to perceived "bad karma," rooted more in superstition than religious conviction. Traditionally, widows are forbidden from remarriage and excluded from family festivities, with some believing even their shadows bring misfortune.
Regrettably, these beliefs are internalized by widows themselves. Stripped of social and economic standing, they find themselves unwelcome where they were once cherished. While the outlawing of "sati" (ritual self-immolation on the husband's funeral pyre) has occurred, widows in India remain marginalized. Efforts by the Indian government to alter these norms face challenges rooted in entrenched beliefs.
